V. Reading Comprehension(10%) Starting this month, people in Taiwan have the chance to indulge their growing interest in gardening. The 2010 Taipei InternationalFlora Exposition opens November 6, 2010 and runs until April 25, 2011. It is the first time the Flora Expo is being held here, and also thefirst time Taiwan has played host to an internationally recognized horticultural show. This is a great opportunity for Taiwan to show offboth its dedication to gardening and its achievements in fields such as biotechnology. The Taipei Flora Expo is the latest event to be authorized by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), anorganization that was founded in 1948. In 2006, the city government and the flower-growing industry in Taiwan approached the AIPH andwon the right to stage this year’s Expo, making Taipei the seventh Asian city to do so. The purpose of the Taipei Flora Expo is to showcasethe production capability and creativity of Taiwanese horticulture, as well as to stimulate cultural exchange and tourism. The event, with its theme of “Rivers, Flowers, and New Horizons,” will be staged on a 91.8-hectare site in Taipei. Fourteen pavilionsand halls have been set up over four exhibition areas. The Yuanshan Park Area, for example, contains the stunning Expo Dome(爭豔館),where visitors can enjoy a remarkable diversity of flower displays, special exhibitions, and floral art competitions. Nearby, the Fine Arts  Park Area contains the Expo Hall(舞蝶館)with its unique butterfly and chrysalis design. The hall will be used for folk arts and otherperformances. Visitors to the Xinsheng Park Area can see the innovative Pavilion of the Future(未來館), which provides a vision of green lifestylesusing the latest digital technology. This pavilion also looks at potential future relationships between humans and the natural environment. In the same area, the Pavilion of Dreams(夢想館)contains interactive displays that also use cutting-edge digital technology. Visitors will beable to see amazing 3-D effects, explore the life cycle of plants in a virtual world, and feel as if they are floating through misty forests in a360-degree movie theater. The fourth area, at the Dajia Riverside Park, focuses on riverside leisure and displays a variety of plants andflowers. Organizers of the Expo hope to attract over eight million visitors from Taiwan and abroad and bring in more than NT$16 billion inrevenue. A successful event would help people forget about the difficulties with its preparations, such as the controversy over vastlyinflated flower prices. Hopefully, the Flora Expo will raise Taiwan’s international standing in the areas of horticulture and gardening, whileat the same time encouraging local people to appreciate the beauty of the island’s plants and natural environment.
