A cataract is a dense, cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye, which leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts often develop slowly andcan affect one or both eyes. They begin when proteins in the eye form clumps that 27 the lens from sending clear images to the retina at theback of the eye. Symptoms of a cataract may include blurry or double vision and trouble with bright lights, and trouble seeing at night. Their prevention includes wearing sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat, eating leafyvegetables and fruits, and avoiding smoking. 31 the symptoms may be improved with glasses. If this does not help, surgery to remove thecloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens is the only effective treatment.
