(42~44)       Taiwanese people believe that ghosts come back from the underworld for one month every year. To make those ghosts happy so that they won’t bother living people, Taiwanese people have certain traditions during the “Ghost Month.” The Ghost Month falls in July in the lunar calendar. Ghost Month is a time when families pray to the ghosts of their ancestors. Taiwanese people usually leave food to feed the ghosts of their ancestors so they won’t wander by. Just like Halloween, a day for ghosts, in the western countries, the major event of the Ghost Month is Chung-Yuan Festival. On that day, Chinese prepare lots of food to treat their ancestors’ spirits and homeless ghosts. People in Taiwan also burn specially ghost money to make sure that their ancestors are comfortable in the underworld.        Most important of all, we need to pay attention to some    taboos    in the Ghost Month. After all, people usually see Ghost Month as an unlucky time of year. First, very few people get married, move into a new house, open a business or do a surgery. Second, it’s better for people not to pick up any money on the street because it’s possible for them to marry a ghost. At night during the Ghost Month, you shouldn’t hang clothes outside. If you do, you may welcome ghosts to your places. Going near the water is also the last thing we can do, because the wandering ghosts may drag you to the underworld to replace them, so they may have another chance to go back to the living world.
