    Shakespeare and Company is an English-language bookshop in Paris. It was opened in 1951 and has been a meeting place for Anglophone writers and readers   41      . Founded by American George Whitman, the bookstore was originally called Le Mistral. In 1964, Whitman renamed his store   42   a bookseller he admired, Sylvia Beach, who’d founded the original Shakespeare and Company in 1919.
