問題詳情

II.Haeckel explained that in the later stages of development embryos began to differentiateand resemble the adult members of the species.   33   The woodcuts, they pointed out, unequivocally exaggerated the similarities of the embryos while glossing over importantdifferences.   34    For instance, he claimed the elongated, narrow folds that can beobserved in the necks of the human embryos at a certain stage in their development wereanalogous to the gill slits of a fist.   35   By the early 20th century, embryologists withaccess to most modern techniques and apparatus had largely rejected Haeckel’s theory.   36   While biogenetic law is now considered to have been refuted, it is important that thebiogenetic law is currently viewed as more of a misguided oversimplification than acompletely incorrect theory, and much of Haeckel’s work is still admired.
