PHN occurs after reactivation of the virus, which can lay dormant in the ganglia of a peripheral nerve. Most commonly this is a thoracic nerve, but approximately 10% to 15% of the time the trigeminal nerve is involved, with the V1 dermatome affected in approximately 80% of trigeminal cases. 大部分的帶狀疱疹發生於胸神經，若發生在三叉神經則有80%發生在第一分支的皮節。
