Old Trash, New Life !
You'd never know what is inside just from looking. Some schoolhouses in
Granados, Guatemala have walls built with used plastic bottles and other plastic
waste. The team who built it even had to go to other towns to collect more plastic
waste because they had used up all the trash in their own town. Laura Kutner in
Peace Crops got the idea to start the proiect not only because she saw plastic trash
everywhere in Granados but also because she found many school classrooms
without walls. So she borrowed the idea of building houses with bottles from a book,
and found workers and plastic waste she needed to build the school walls in town.
With more help from a team called " Hug It Forward," Laura Kutner and her team
began to work.
The team filled every bottle with plastic bags and other waste they had
collected. Then they put the bottles inside metal fencing for shape, and later they
used trash again to fill space between the fencing and the bottles. " We need a lot of
plastic trash," said Laura -- " If the space inside the wall wasn't filled the trash, the
wall would not be strong enough to hold and may break at any minute. That's why
we had used up all the trash we could find in our town and needed to go to other
towns to get some more. It was tiring, but the experience was wonderful !"
After the fencing was filled with waste, cement was put on to make them look
like any common wall. Laura called the project a great example of team work.
" If everyone in the town had not helped, we could not have built these walls for
schools !" said Laura.
