In 1963, the Judson Dance Theater had a performance at a Pop Festival in Washington D.C. In the program for the event, Alice Denney, the assistant director of the Washington D.C., Gallery of Modern Art, mistakenly credited Rauschenberg as a choreographer (Tomkins 206). When Rauschenberg saw this he thought of it as a challenge and decided to choreograph his own performance. That same year Robert Rauschenberg directed and performed in Pelican(鵜鶘).The performance consisted of Rauschenberg and Ultvedt dancing on skates wearing sweat suits with a parachute attached to their backs. When they first entered the stage they were on their knees on axels attached to bicycle wheels, which they maneuvered to the farther end.
