問題詳情

Research has shown similarities in brain activity during lucid (or clear, unambiguous)dreaming and psychosis1. This implies that dream therapy may be useful in psychiatric2treatment. How dream therapy can be used to treat psychosis can be illustrated by the relationshipbetween dreams and psychosis. During lucid dreaming, a hybrid3state between sleeping and being awake, distinct patternsof electrical activity in the brain are detected. The surprising thing is that similar patterns are alsodetected in such neurological and psychiatric disorders as schizophrenia and depersonalization. In fact, lucid dreaming puts the brain in a dissociated state, in which people lose consciouscontrol over their mental processes. They are capable of neither logical thinking nor emotionalreaction. However, a dissociated state also occurs when patients suffering from psychiatricconditions are awake. What neuroscientists should do now is to explore how to apply theirfindings to psychiatric conditions, using sleep research to interpret data from patients withpsychotic conditions. Although currently significant progress has only been made in treating people sufferingfrom nightmares, scientists still believe that dream therapy is worth investigating.
