出血時間是用於評估初級止血作用的檢查，可檢測血小板功能缺陷及先天或後天中重度血小板與血管壁間作用的缺陷，如von Willebrand disease (vWD)、尿毒症、多發性骨髓瘤、骨髓化生不良症候群、骨髓增生性疾病、血小板無力症(Glanzmann thrombasthenia)、巨大血小板綜合症(Bernard Soulier syndrome)、storage pool disease。其中出血時間對輕度的血小板功能缺陷，如storage pool disease敏感度較低，可用血小板功能分析項目(Platelet function assay)取代檢測。
