問題詳情

四 閱讀測驗 (10%)  Sometimes it looks like everybody you know is studying English. It has become a very popular activity and you may find different kinds of English lessons and all kinds of English students. However, there is a very special group of students, who attend an English language class in the southeastern Taipei suburb of Mucha (木柵). What makes them so special? In fact, the average age of the students in that class is 73.  The teacher, Lee Taylor, from the United Kingdom, said that at first he was not sure whether he would take up the job because “I had no idea what to talk and how they’d react.” In the end, however, he was pleasantly surprised. “The students are actually quicker to respond than some of the younger classes I teach, though they prefer to stick to the familiar textbook. I’m very impressed by their enthusiasm in wanting to learn something new, rather than just taking things easy.”  What motivates these elderly people to learn English? At least half of them want to learn English to be able to communicate when they travel abroad. Others want to visit their children in Canada or the U.S.A. and impress them with their knowledge. These senior citizens who keep active set a very good example for younger people. They increase their energy and renew their interest in what is going on around them and in doing so, become the best example of the idea of “lifelong learning.”
