The basis of this source (alsocalled a generator) is a high-voltagetransformer, which transforms the mainsvoltage (220V/380V) upwards - either directly from the mains voltage to therequired value, or more recently via an electronic oscillating circuit. Thehigh-voltage transformer has a high conversion ratio (givenby the ratio of the number of turns on the primary and secondary windings) ofthe order of 1000 or more. Newer devices use high-frequency sources highvoltage.
