五、閱讀測驗 10% (請於答案卷上作答)(一)How is Donald Trump earning traction against the Republican Party’s political elite andnow leading the Republican Party’s presidential nomination race? This has got many experts scratching their heads, considering the Republican Party’s A-Team has always revolved aroundJed Bush, Marco Rubio, and Chris Christie. Trump has never seemed to count as one     Trump was not taken seriously when he announced his run. The Washington Post calledhim “an aimless, angry leader.” The Wall Street Journal questioned how long people “will keeppretending he’s a serious candidate.” The Huffington Post refused to include him in theirpolitical coverage and opted to feature him on their Entertainment section instead.     Trump the real estate tycoon owns billions of dollars and dozens of landmark buildings, and he was once criticized as having “an ego bigger than the Empire State building.” Alongwith such an ego is his combative personality, which often leads to exchanging harsh remarkswith other celebrities. For example, when Trump learned a widely respected Republican Partymember and political strategist Karl Rove called his presidential candidacy a “joke,” heresponded by calling Rove a “loser” who “should go into retirement where he belongs.” WhenMiss USA winner Tara Conner was caught drinking underage in bars, Trump, the gala’ssponsor and director, refused to strip her of the title. His decision was not shared by thetelevision chat show host Rosie O’Donnell, who compared Trump to a “snake-oil salesman”and said: “Left the first wife, had an affair, had kids both times, but he’s the moral compass for20-year-olds in America?” Trump responded by calling her a “big, fat pig” and “a loser. A realloser. I think she’s just terrible.” These word exchanges have fed the media much stuff to writeand talk about and it is little wonder why Trump often ends up being ridiculed in the media.      Trump has been called sexist and racist, making controversial comments on women, immigrants, Mexicans, and blacks. So, who are Trump’s supporters? It is not hard to see thatthose who embrace Trump are just disgusted, outraged and frustrated with “business-as-usual”in Washington. They want to up-end the system and throw out the “professional” politicians. They are getting tired of the old way, and with Trump’s combative and provocative remarks, this void seems to be filled.
