發生時期氣溫較高、蚊蟲較多的季節。病原體,病媒種類及環境因素非洲馬疫病毒係屬於里奧病毒科(Reoviridae)的環狀病毒屬(Orbivirus)。糠蚊屬(Culicoides spp.)為主要病媒昆蟲。感染動物馬、驢、騾、安哥拉山羊。象與斑馬可能是保毒動物。馬的死亡率為25%至90%。潛伏期發燒型7日，亦可長到2至4週。肺臟型3至5日。心臟型的潛伏期較肺臟型略長。預後死亡率80%至90%。參考http://vettech.nvri.gov.tw/Articles/ahm/266.html
