The host city for the Games of the XXX Olympiad will be the city of London, and the2012 Summer Olympic Games are to be held from July 27 to August 12, 2012. London hostedOlympic Games in the 1908 Summer Olympics and the 1948 Summer Olympics. On May 18, 2004,the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) reduced the number of candidate cities to five:London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, and Paris. By November 19, 2004, all five candidate citieshad submitted their candidate files to the IOC. The IOC inspection team visited the five candidatecities during February and March of 2005. On June 6, 2005, the IOC released its evaluationreports for the five candidate cities. Throughout the process, Paris was widely seen as the favoriteto win the nomination. On July 6, 2005, the final selection was announced in Singapore.Surprisingly, at the end of the fourth round of voting, London won the right to host the 2012Games. The 2012 Summer Olympic program features 26 sports and a total of 39 disciplines. London’sbid featured 28 sports, but the IOC voted to drop baseball and softball from the 2012 Games twodays after it selected London as the host city. They will be Olympic sports for the last time atBeijing in 2008
