問題詳情

(三) As we know, a person begins toacquire a language through imitating.Research shows that children’s language development goes throughseveral stages, from simple to complex. Infants start without anylanguage at all. When they’re four months old, babies an read lips and discriminatespeech sounds. Usually, language starts off as a recallof simple words without any associatedmeaning, but as children grow, words acquire meaning, and connectionsbetween words are formed. Then, more and more new meanings and newassociations are created, and children’s vocabulary increases.      Experts think that parents canuse a range of strategies to help children develop language ability, such as talking to them, using facial expressions, reading, andstory-telling. Of course, the best way is talking. Parents who talkto their children can substantiallyspeed up their children’s language development. How parents talkto their children makes a big difference in their children’slanguage development. If a parent encourages the child to activelyrespond to what the parent is reading, the child’s language skillsincrease.     A study was done with children2-3 years old and their parents. Half of the thirty childrenparticipated in the experimental study; the other half acted as thecontrol group. In the experimental group the parents were given atwo-hour training sessionin which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather thanyes/no questions. For example, the parent would ask, “What is thedoggie doing?” rather than “Is the doggie running away?”Those parents were also instructed in how to expand on theirchildren’s answers, how to suggest alternative possibilities andhow to praise correct answers.     At the beginning of the study, the two groups of children did not differ in their languagedevelopment, but at the end of one month, the children in theexperimental group were 5.5 months ahead of the control group on atest of verbalexpression and vocabulary. Nine months later, the children in theexperimental group still showed they were six months ahead of thechildren in the control group.[!--empirenews.page--]
