問題詳情

Formosan salmon, a subspecies of the seema(櫻鱒), is unique to Taiwan. This fish is a critically endangered species and is protected in its natural habitat by the Taiwan government. In fact, this is one of the rarest fish in the world, with only about 400 left. The Formosan salmon used to be a staple of the Taiwanese aborigines’ diet. Over the years, overfishing has resulted in a rapid decrease in the total number of this fish, but nowadays pollution is actually the main threat.
Actually, the Formosan salmon is a subspecies that dates back to the last Ice Age(冰河時代), at which time these fish became locked inland in extremely cold mountain streams. Therefore, it’s amazing that Taiwan, a subtropical island, should have salmon, which normally prefer a more temperate climate. About a foot in length, the Formosan salmon lives in cold streams at elevations above 1,500 meters; it can survive in temperatures as low as 16 degrees Celsius. With so few members of this subspecies still around, Taiwan’s conservationists are trying hard to protect them. Hopefully, this Formosan national treasure can one day be made to thrive again as it once did.
