問題詳情
When many people are asked what they think the most dangerous jobs in the world are, they usually think about firefighters or police officers. Jobs such as these clearly involve serious risks. Firefighters, for example, rush into burning buildings in order to save lives, and police officers sometimes have to deal with violent criminals. It may surprise you to learn, however, that a considerably more dangerous line of work is that of the commercial fisherman. Being a fisherman may not sound glamorous or exciting. However, according to research and statistics, the chances of a fisherman dying on the job are many times higher than those of a police officer or firefighter. According to data gathered in the United States, fishermen suffer 115 deaths per 100,000 workers in a year. Police officers and firefighters, on the other hand, suffer only 22 and 17 deaths respectively. The main reasons fishing is so dangerous are that fishermen are often very far from the shore in order to haul in their catch and many of the boats they use are not particularly big. If the weather turns very bad, they may not be able to find shelter, so they often run the risk of being injured or falling overboard. In the worst-case scenario, the boat may capsize or even sink. If this happens, the chances of surviving are very small.
