Most ex-convicts expect that they can start a new life after leaving prison. C. For many ex-convicts, such distrust destroys their faith in beginning a new life, causing them to repeat their mistakes and commit new crimes. D. Landlords usually don’t like to rent their houses to ex-convicts. E. Ex-convicts often have trouble establishing a new life for themselves.     For those who commit crimes and serve time in prison, it seems that life will never be the same.46. However, very soon they realize that they are not treated the same as other people. The details of the crime that has been committed are not always important–once a person’s record is marked with the word “criminal,” it is very difficult to move forward.     47. When they try to find a job, they often find that most employers will ask about their histories. They can be rejected because of their criminal records. In addition, ex-convicts find it equally difficult to rent an apartment or borrow money from a bank for buying a house. 48. Banks are also hesitant to lend money to people with criminal records. With no employment history and little money, ex-convicts often have trouble meeting their basic needs as a result.     One of the hardest battles to overcome, however, is escaping the shame of being an ex-convict in the eyes of the people in the community. 49. In their minds, it is in the ex-convicts’ nature to do evil deeds. 50. Certainly, some of them may be able to move forward. However, they cannot do so without determination and–of course-the help of families, friends, and the rest of society.
