Encyclopedias were enormous booksthat came in sets of up to 30, with subjects arranged alphabetically. They were filledwith illustrations, maps, and photographs. Most libraries had a set of encyclopedias,but students were not able to check them out, because they were too large. Ifsomebody else was using the one you needed, you simply had to wait your turn.Encyclopedias have existed for over 2000 years. These days, online encyclopediassuch as Wikipedia have practically replaced traditional printed ones. Some of the mostpopular printed encyclopedias, such as Encyclopedia Britannica, have also movedtheir information to online websites.
