Why did the company choose the name Starbuck? Bowker recalledthat Terry Heckler, with whom Bowker owned an advertising agency, thought words beginning with "st" werepowerful. Then the founders brainstormed a list of words beginning with "st". Someone pulled out an old miningmap of the Cascade Range and saw a mining town named "Starbo", which immediately reminded Bowker of"Starbuck," the name of the chief mate in the novel Moby-Dick.     It was in the early 1980s that Starbucks first became profitable, and despite an initial economic downturn withits expansion into the Midwest and British Columbia in the late 1980s, the company experienced revitalizedprosperity with its entry into California in the early 1990s.
