Almost everyone knows the Mona Lisa, one of Leonardo da Vinci’s best works. Millions of peoplevisit the Louvre(羅浮宮) for it every year. In fact, the painting was not that famous until it was lost in1911. When Leonardo visited France in 1517, he brought the Mona Lisa with him and kept working onit. After he died, the King of France bought the painting, and then it was shifted to the Louvre in 1797.On August 21st,1911, a worker at the Louvre hid the painting in his coat and took it away. The museumthought the painting was in another room and didn’t know they were in trouble until the next day. Thenewspapers reported a lot on the theft. It was a big surprise to the world: someone could easily steal apainting from the Louvre! The news soon caught people’s eye, and the painting became more andmore famous. After that, many people even went to the Louvre to see the blank place and the hooks forthe Mona Lisa.         After two years, the police finally caught the worker because he tried to sell the painting to amuseum in Italy. In his eyes, the Mona Lisa belonged to Italy. He stole it because he wanted to bring itback to Italy. People in Italy treated him as a hero, and he only stayed in jail for a few months. Maybehe was also a hero to the Mona Lisa because he made everyone get interested in it. Without him, thepainting might not be as popular as it is today
