However when you reach the turnstile, you realize that your transit pass is out of money. What’s more, you find your pocket empty, too. What can you do? If you have a bit of time and an empty plastic bottle or two, you may have the solution to the problem. In Beijing, special vending machines have been introduced to the city’s subway system for years. Commuters can put empty plastic bottles into the machines and have value added to their transit passes. It takes them about 30 seconds to process a bottle and credit the money to their cards. Similar devices that are based on the concept of recycling for reward have been set up in many locations in the US, Japan and Brazil.Of course, these machines will not be without competition. Recycling is really big business around the world and can get very competitive. Nonetheless, these recycling vending machines will hopefully become a way to keep the world’s streets and subways a little cleaner.(adapted from 聯合報 好讀周報 No.247) turnstile 十字轉門 realize 發覺 transit pass 交通卡 empty 空的solution 解決方案 vending machine 自動販賣機 commuter 通勤者 value 值 add 增加 process 處理 credit 支付 similar 類似的 device 裝置 concept 概念 reward 獎賞 location 位置 competition 競爭 competitive 競爭的 Nevertheless 然而
