The cells primarily responsible for PGE2 production in the periodontium are macrophages and fibroblasts. PGE2 levels are increased in the tissues and in GCF at sites undergoing periodontal attachment loss. PGE2 induces the secretion of MMPs, as well as osteoclastic bone resorption, and it contributes signiicantly to the alveolar bone loss seen with periodontitis.
