空韻-相對於音節沒有聲母是「零聲母」的概念，一個音節寫出來沒有韻母而有聲母則稱為「空韻」。華語中有一舌尖元音「帀」，此單韻在國字注音時不必標注，僅在討論語音學時提出來，它是ㄓ、ㄔ、ㄕ、ㄖ、ㄗ、ㄘ、ㄙ這七個聲母後的韻母，因為ㄓ、ㄔ、ㄕ、ㄖ、ㄗ、ㄘ、ㄙ此七個聲母兼任韻母，例如『是』ㄕˋ，平時注音時不標注「帀」，所以稱之為「空韻」。漢語拼音標注ㄓ、ㄔ、ㄕ、ㄖ、ㄗ、ㄘ、ㄙ則要加上表示空韻的 i，例如『資（ㄗ/zī）』。
