The End of a Star
The world of sailing has lost one of its greatest and most respected navigators. On Monday, January 26th, Felicia Portman died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 95. She was found in her room by her loving son, Max Portman, when he went to kiss her goodnight. He told us that she wasn’t in any pain and that in fact, he saw that she had a smile on her face when he opened the door to her room. He had a feeling she was thinking about the sport she knew and loved. Ms. Portman got her first taste of the sport at the very young age of six when her father took her with him on the family boat in 1921. She had expressed in many past interviews that she knew right away that it was for her because she felt that she seemed to be flying through the air. She also credited her father with teaching her everything that she knew about boats, sailing, and the water. A year after her very first trip out to sea, Ms. Portman went sailing on her own and didn’t stop there. During her time at university, she was the captain of the school’s team three years in a row. It wasn’t until she finished her studies that she took the sailing world by storm, and the rest is history.
