Teacher Over the Falls
Niagara Falls is one of the largest and most powerful water falls in the world. On the border between Canada and the United States, the famous falls has 20 million visitors every year. Sixty meters high, Niagara Falls has 168,000 cubic meters of water falling per minute--- that’s about 1 million bathtubs full every minute. Who would like to fall over that? In fact, some people have tried.
On October 24, 1901, a 63-year-old teacher from Michigan, Annie Taylor, made the first attempt. She trapped herself inside a wooden barrel with the help of some others. Then a boat pulled the barrel to the middle of the Niagara River and then let go. Annie’s barrel quickly went down the fast river and fell over the falls. 17 minutes later, people saw the barrel at the bottom of the falls and pulled it to the shore. What did Annie say when she was safely out of the barrel? “No one should ever do that again!”
Unfortunately, people did. 12 more people went over Niagara Falls in a barrel after Annie’s trial. Eight lived to tell about it, but four died.
