Joe : I'm reading Devoted : The Story of a Father's Love for
His Son, a book about Team Hoyt. Their story is really
touching.
Jay : Team Hoyt? Who are they?
Joe : They are father and son from Holland. The father Dick
Hoyt was born in 1940, and his son Rick Hoyt was born in
1962. Rick can't talk or walk. But they competed in a
race together in 1977. Later, Team Hoyt kept joining
different races.
Jay : Their story seems like the story of Team Long Brothers.
Joe : Yes, but a little different. It was Rick that asked his
father to team up with him for their first race. And he
joined the race because he wanted to help raise money for a
player. The player was paralyzed in an accident.
Jay : Wow! That was so kind of Rick to help people like him.
Joe : After the race, Rick told his father, "When I'm running,
it feels like I'm not paralyzed."
Jay : Really? By the way, how did Rick become paralyzed?
Joe : Here you go. Just remember to return the book to me
after reading it.
