People say fireworks began in China. Between 600 and 900 A.D., the Chinese invented gunpowder. They put it into bamboo tubes and threw them into the fire. The tubes would burst with a loud noise. So this was the first firework. Chinese used them to scare away ghosts and celebrate special events. European rulers loved fireworks. They often used them to entertain people and show their wealth and power. French kings had great firework shows at their palaces. Before the 1830s, fireworks were not very colorful, only with orange flashes or white sparks. Then the Italians started to add a few metals and other things to fireworks. The result was colorful sparks and bright bursts. That is the firework shows you see now.
