James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) who often stayedat Stanway House after the Great War is best known forgiving us Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. He isless well known for his cricketing talent although he likedto play it very much. He found an amateur cricket teamfor his friends, calling themselves the “Allahakbarries”.The name which was in the mistaken belief that “Allahakbar”meant 'Heaven help us' in Arabic (rather than 'Godis great') appealed to the author’s sense of humor and hisapproach to the game. The team did not take the game tooseriously. It also refused to practice on the grounds that ifthey were watched it would only gave their opponentsgreater confidence.
