問題詳情

IV. Reading Comprehension The Ullambana Festival is an important part of Ghost Month in Taiwan. In Sanskrit, an ancient language in India, “Ullambana” means “deliverance (解救) from suffering.” Thus, this festival is also called “the festival of deliverance.” It originated from the story “Mulien Saving His Mother from Hell.”    In the story, Mulien learned that his mother’s spirit was very hungry in the underworld, so he traveled to Hell with food for her. When he finally reached his mother, however, he was not able to feed her. The food caught fire before he could feed it to her. Full of sadness, Mulien begged Buddha (佛祖) to tell him how he could save his mother. Buddha answered, “Your mother’s sins (罪惡) are too great for you alone to save her. Therefore, you must find ten people who believe in me and pray with them on the fifteenth day of the seventh month.” Mulien quickly did what Buddha had told him and was finally able to set his mother free from Hell.    Today, this festival continues to be celebrated on the fifteenth day of Ghost Month in Taiwan. Though it began as a story of one man trying to save his mother, the Ullambana Festival has now become a time for people to pray for all those who need to be saved from suffering.
