(VI)

Studying in a foreign country can be exciting. But it is difficult, too, especially if the culture is very different from your own. However, there are also many surprises, even if the culture is similar. When Celine, a British girl, first arrived here in America, she knew that Americans ate food with a knife and a fork. “But they don’t use a knife and a fork like we do,” said Celine. In UK, we eat with a fork in the left hand and a knife in the right hand. But Americans often just use a fork in the right hand. ”Celine is also surprised that Americans tip a lot more than the British do. “We never tip a waiter just for a cup of coffee, but Americans do. American English is different from British English, too. It took me some time to get used to it.”
However, for the students from more different countries, settling in can take longer. Li-Chei, a shy boy from Taiwan, came to America a few months ago. He said “when I first arrived, everything was new and different to me. I was wondering if I made the right decision to study here. I felt so lost. At the airport, I was trying to take the subway, but all the signs were in English. I didn’t even know who to ask for help. It seemed no one understood me. Now I still miss my family and friends in my hometown and I feel really homesick.
Hye Kyo just arrived from Korea three years ago. She told us, “Li-Chei shouldn’t worry too much.” This is normal. I felt the same as he did. I didn’t know what to do and my English was not good at first.” Hye Kyo realized this was because all her friends were form Korea. Therefore she decided to make friends with American students. “I joined the school clubs. I finally found people with the same interest. It made all the difference. I began to feel happier. ”
Susuki, a Japanese student said, ”my problem is the food. I really missed my favorite dishes in Japan!” “Cooking for myself was so hard that I ate a lot of fast food. One day I found a Japanese restaurant. Now I go there a lot. Also, my mom sends me some Japanese food, and it really helps. ”*similar相似的 British英國的;英國人 tip給小費、小費 get used to習慣 settle in安頓下來homesick思鄉病 realize了解 seem似乎
