B.      Easter Island   In the middle of the Pacific Ocean(太平洋), there is a very special place: Easter Island.The island itself is small (only 117 squarekilometers), with very few people living on it.But it is important for an old, old reason, with ahistory going back more than 1,000 years.   All over Easter Island, there are large statues, callmegaliths, built by the ancient people of Polynesia between 800and 1600 A.D. They are in the shape of large heads with bignoses and ears. There are more than 800 of these megaliths, andsome of them are more than 10 meters tall. Many of them restupon tombs.   Besides that, the megaliths are very much a mystery.Hopefully, over time, we will learn more about why the ancientsPolynesians built them.
