(40-42)
A study showed people in Wonderland read less and spent less on books in 2018 than they did in 2014. In 2014, people above 18 years old spent 3.6 hours per week reading books, and in 2018, the time dropped to 2.2 hours. On average, people of this age group read 2.01 books per month in 2014, and the number went down to 1.5 in 2018. They bought 4.12 books and spent $1950 on books in 2018, a little less than 4.25 books and $2110 in 2014.
Why did people leave books behind? Many people believe it was because of the Internet. The study found these people spent 1.28 hours on the Internet every day in 2014, and the time rose to 1.44 in 2018. It means on average each of them spent 1.12 more hours on the Net instead of books each week.
In the study, people were also asked about their favorite places to read when they did open a book. Most people said they liked to read at home (88.1%), in the library (17.1%) and public places (13%). Only 2.6% of the people read on the bus, the train or the MRT.
They were also asked why they read. The top three reasons are to get knowledge (72.9%), to have fun and relax (50.2%), and to find more to talk with friends (43.3%).
