Today is February 6th. A very big earthquake just hit Hualien City in Taiwanand took many lives. I watched the news on TV and saw many people crying sadly.I felt so terrible.        Earthquakes are the shaking and moving of the ground when energy lets go inwaves. These waves are seismic waves. They are like ocean waves, but they movethrough the ground. Most earthquakes come from the movement of large pieces ofthe Earth’s crust, and we call them plates. Two plates meet at a fault. Faults looklike large gaps in the ground. If the two plates meet and move in different ways,they build up energy at the fault line. When too much energy builds up, the groundstarts to shake.        More than 1,000,000 earthquakes occur in the world each year. But we canonly feel about 100,000. Of these, only about 19 a year bring dangerous damage.Scientists still cannot predict when and where the next big one will hit. That is whyit is important to prepare for it when you live in, or are visiting, an earthquakezone.
