D.     Lawmakers in Taiwan have passed a bill that legalizes same-sex marriage. This makes Taiwan the first place in Asia to pass such a law. Taiwan’s old law said that marriage could only be   43   a man and a woman. Recently, Taiwan’s highest court ruled that this law was     44.   The court said that the Legislative Yuan had two years to pass new legislation. This matter has been considered   45   in many places, and not everyone agreed about it in Taiwan, either. The new legislation, which   46   on May 24 of this year, passed by 66 to 27 votes. No changes were made to the existing civil code, but the special law does allow same-sex couples to   47    “marriage registration.” Same-sex marriage is allowed in many European countries, some Latin American countries, Canada, and the United States.
