Theseparticles include neutrons, protons, deuterons, a particles, negative pions, and heavy ions accelerated to high energies. Their use in radiation therapy is still experimental, and because of the enormous cost involved, only a few institutions have been able to acquire these modalities for clinical trials. From the literature, which is full of encouraging as well as discouraging reports about their efficacy, it appears that the role of heavy particles in radiation therapy is not yet established. However, the radiobiologic interest in the field remains as strong as ever.
