[40-42]
Allen: Good evening, Dr. Wu. I’m glad to invite you to talk aboutsummer slide. In the very beginning, could you explainwhat it is? I don’t think most parents know it well.
Dr. Wu: Well. Thank you for inviting me here. It is what happenswhen children don’t practice their reading skills over thecourse of the summer break. That is the skills studentslearn during the school year will be lost or forgotten overthe summer.
Allen: So, it’s common that many students do worse on tests at theend of the summer vacation than they do on the same tests atthe beginning of the summer vacation. Does it mean students become stupid over the summer?
Dr. Wu: Of course not! That many students spend less time readingor learning is the main reason. Sadly, although thosestudents try to catch up after school starts, they fall furtherbehind the students who don’t have learning losses.
Allen: I’ve read some studies. They show kids with more accessesto books over the summer perform better than those withoutaccesses to books.
Dr. Wu: Yes. You’re right. Very often, students from poor familieshave fewer books or no books at home. Year after year, thechances for the students who have no accesses to books tocatch up with the other students are quite slim.
Allen: Now, I think the parents who listen to our program will havea clear picture of summer slide. Thank you, Dr. Wu.
