2.The marathon is quite popular in recent years. We know themarathon is a long-distance running race of 42.195 kilometers(26.219 miles). A lot of people join all kinds of marathons everyyear, but few of them know how marathon got its name. In fact,the name came from the legend (傳說) of a Greek messenger(信使), Pheidippides. He was said tohave run all the way from Marathon to Athens to report thevictory(勝利)in the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. He diedafter that.The marathon became one of Olympic events in 1892, butthe event was only for men at that time. The first winner wasSpyridon Louis, a Greek water-carrier. He spent two hours fiftyeight minutes and fifty seconds finishing his running. Themarathon for women was first held in 1984, and the first winnerwas an American, Joan Benoit. It took her two hours twenty-fourminutes and fifty-two seconds to finish her running. According to the IAAF(國際田徑總會), the followingman and woman are the top fastest (updated September 2016).
