問題詳情

IV. Reading Comprehension    A  patient sits in bed slapping her face and pulling her hair. She’s not crazy; it’s just that one of her hands doesn’t really belong to her anymore. Her name is Karen, and she’s suffering from a condition known as Alien Hand Syndrome (AHS).AHS was first identified in 1908, and there have been less than 50 recorded cases of the disease since then. The condition is usually caused by an injury to the brain, but it can also occur as a result of brain surgery. Sufferers say that although they can still feel their hand, they do not have full control over its movements. Symptoms vary from patient to patient and can range from simple grasping motions to complex actions like unbuttoning a shirt.    Karen’s condition began after she underwent surgery to cure her of epilepsy, a disorder of the nervous system. When she awoke, she found that her left hand was behaving as if it had a mind of its own. She tells stories of lighting cigarettes, balancing them on ashtrays, and then watching as her left hand picked them up and put them out. She also says she kept losing things as her uncontrollable hand would secretly take them out from her bag.   Thanks to a new drug, Karen’s symptoms are now under control, but until doctors are able to find a cure, she’ll never be 100% sure that her left hand isn’t leading a life of its own.
