B.When you were young, your parents and teachers taught you how to act properly. Most of the behavior (行為) is so natural to you that you can’t imagine people behaving differently. However, each culture has its own set of expectations for how people behave. If you travel to another country, it is important that you learn that country’s cultural practices so that your behavior won’t be insulting to your hosts. One cultural rule includes body language. In America, for example, you may hold your fist (拳頭) out with your thumb (大拇指) raised in the air as a way to say “good job!” or “I approve.” In other places, this gesture might not be acceptable.If you go to an Arab country, you should be careful to keep your feet on the floor because it is extremely rude to point the bottoms of your feet at people. In Indonesia, you should never use your left hand to give something to someone because the left hand is considered unclean. The use of eye contact varies greatly from culture to culture as well. In some places, such as the U.S., looking someone in the eye means that you are showing respect, paying attention, and that you are being open and honest. A student in the U.S. may get into trouble if he or she refuses to look the teacher in the eye when the teacher is talking to him or her. In other countries, lowering the eyes is the way to show respect (尊敬). In parts of Africa, if a child meets the teacher’s eyes, he or she may be punished for being disrespectful (不敬的).  These examples show how simple movements could cause great conflict between people if they are unaware of the meanings of the behavior. If you visit another culture, be sure to learn some of that culture’s norms (準則) to avoid conflict (衝突).
