Then we noticed Sarah, the new girl, sitting alone at a table and reading a book. My friends, Joy and Rachel, started to make fun of her, laughing at Sarah’s dirty and funny shoes. I was so angry with my friends. I couldn’t believe how rude (無禮) they were. I packed (收拾) my things and left. Rachel and Joy were too busy laughing to even notice. Two days later, I asked Sarah if I could join her and told her I was sorry for what my friends had done. She invited me to sit next to her. I asked her about the book she was reading, explaining that I didn’t enjoy books. I found them boring.  Sarah laughed and said she had something perfect for me. She reached into her bag and handed me a book of short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. That day began a new life for me. I finished reading the book in two days and was hungry for more. Sarah showed me a whole new world of literature (文學) and we became best friends. I continued to read through college. The day I became a writer, I knew who I had to thank. When my first book was published, I sent one a book to Sarah. On the first page I wrote, “Thank you, Sarah, for showing me a new world.”
