The Taiwanese like to give gifts, but keep in mind that there are many taboos that forbid* giving certain objects as gifts. For instance, do not give anyone scissors, knives, or anything used for cutting. These indicate to the Taiwanese that you want to cut off the relationship. Do not give clocks, handkerchiefs, or straw sandals. They are associated with death. Do not wrap gifts in white, blue, or black paper. White flowers, such as chrysanthemums*, usually mean death and should not be given as gifts. Umbrellas and fans should be avoided because in Chinese the word for “umbrella” or “fan” sounds like the word “to scatter.” This implies* breaking apart a friendship. It is also not a good idea to give someone a pair of shoes as it implies that you want him or her to walk away. Pears are the fruit to avoid giving to people because the word for “pear” sounds like the word for “to leave” in Chinese. Plan carefully when you want to give someone a gift, or you may offend him or her.
