(43-45)Rosa Parks
Years ago, in some cities in the US, laws said that black people could not sit next to white people on buses. Otherlaws said that black people could not use the same drinking fountains or restrooms as white people.
One day, an African American woman named Rosa Parks got on a bus. After she sat down, the bus became full. Thebus driver told Rosa to give up her seat to a white man. Rosa didn’t agree with him. She believed it was not fair that shehad to give up her seat.
The bus driver then called the police, and the police put Rosa in jail. People heard about Rosa’s story. Some peoplesaid there should be fairer laws. Soon, more people began asking the government to change the law.
Slowly, places in the United States began changing their laws. Bus drivers couldn’t make black people give up theirseats on their buses. New laws said black people must be able to use the same drinking fountains and restrooms as whitepeople.
Rosa Parks was a person of strong character. We remember Rosa today as a hero who worked for fairness andequality.
