(二) On the fourth floor of the elementary school, about 90 students gather on thegym's hardwood floor. Basketball hoops hang at both ends of the room. But thechildren aren’t here to play basketball—this is their classroom. Computers line thehall, and chairs and desks are clustered across the worn-out floor.As in many schools in New York City, recent waves of immigrants have forcededucators to cram students into any available space—including storage areas, largeclosets and gyms. The subway line runningthrough the area was nicknamed “The International Express” in a recent study. Thestudy said 17,200 immigrants from 112 countries settled in the neighborhood from1983 to 1989, making it the most diverse area in the city. Instead of concentration onAmerican holidays and traditions that these students could hardly appreciate, thegroup is more likely to learn about, say, Chinese New Year and other holidayscelebrated by the students’ families.
