 [I.]
TAITUNG, Taiwan– There is a group of people who tries to collect as many plants aspossible before these plants are gone.
These people are searching Taiwan for as many plant samples(樣本) as they canfind, from Taitung to Dongyin(Matsu).
“I started collecting plants when I was still at school. I didn’t think it was thatimportant. But since I began working at the conservation centre(保育中心), I haveunderstood that many plants that used to be there, are no longer there,” said Hung Hsinchieh, a researcher at the conservation centre.
“So for many things, if you don’t protect them, perhaps in the future you’ll no longer be able to find them.”70% of the island is forest, which is home to deer, wild boar and Formosan black bears.Taiwan’s government has taken actions and a turn to renewable energy(再生能源), but the island still acts poorly when it comes todealing with(處理) climate change(氣候變遷).
“Then we’ll have these plants that we can use. Or maybe one day, we can provide them.”The goal is to make sure Taiwan’s biodiversity(生物多樣性) is protected. And these plants can one day be re-introduced.
“We hope that these plants have a chance to go back to their home. Or one day, when we wish to create a (new) place, these plantsare able to live there happily,” said Cheng.
