(a) It was reported that scientists detected that a Greenland shark might be 512 years oldwith precision. Many people did not know such a mysterious animal well. In fact, Greenlandsharks are among the largest sharks in the world, comparable in size to great whites. They havebeen known to grow as long as 6,4 meters (21 feet) and as heavy as 1,000 kg (2,100 pounds),though the typical Greenland shark weighs around 400 kg (880 pounds) and is about 2.44 to 4.8meters long (18 to 15.7 feet). If human beings would like to eat their meat, they had better say no.In fact, Greenland shark meat can cause symptoms in humans similar to severe inebriation, and the neurotoxins in their flesh can even be incapacitating to sled dogs. This toxicity is due totrimethylamine oxide (TMAO) in the tissue of Greenland shark flesh, which helps the fishstabilize their enzymes and structural proteins against the debilitating effects of severe cold andhigh water pressure. Nonetheless, Greenland shark meat can be prepared in a fermentationprocess that removes the TMAO, resulting in a much-enjoyed national dish of Iceland. This dish, known as Hakarl or kastur hakarl, is prepared by hanging the meat of the Greenland shark up forfour to five months, thus removing the adverse effects of the neurotoxins. They have a voraciousappetite and will eat almost anything. Typically they eat eels, lumpfish, flounder, and other smallsharks, but they will also eat carrion, the meat of dead animals. They have also been known to eatland animals. Greenland Sharks have been found with a polar bear jaw, an entire reindeer, horsebones, and a moose hide in their stomachs. Despite the possibility of their living on various kindsof food, they grow at a very slow speed. Their size grows one centimeter bigger each year. Theyare also seldom reported to attack human beings. Although there are some carly Inuit legends thatclaim Greenland sharks have attacked numerous kayaks, yet the reality is that there is not onedocumented case of such an encounter. Greenland sharks are large and strong enough to easilyinjure or kill a human if they feel threatened, but history has shown them to be especiallynon-confrontational
