        A few years ago, Charles Littnan, a lead scientist of the Hawaiian monk seal program, received anunusual email with the brief title—“Eel in nose.” After a few exchanged emails, Littnan realized thatthere was a seal with an eel up its nose. While the researchers decided to remove the eel from the seal’snostril and regarded it as a bizarre accident, it kept happening for a few times sufficient enough to ruleout an isolated accident. The fact that this was never reported until recently, and that it was onlyhappening to juveniles, was even more puzzling.
         However, several theories about such a strange behavior have already been ruled out. The islands areremote and visited only by biologists, so it couldn’t be the hand of a malevolent human. The seals’nostrils also shut when they are diving for food, so it’s unlikely that an eel would jump into the nose of aseal. The other idea scientists were considering was vomiting, but again it’s unlikely that an eel wouldhave been pushed through the nasal cavity.
         Littman has another idea. It seems that juvenile seals may not be all that different from humanteenagers. It may be a “teenage trend”—one seal accidentally got an eel up its nose, and then othersstarted copying it because they thought it was “cool.” There’s no evidence to truly back this up, but at thispoint, it’s as good an idea as any.
