(五)Below is what Mary wrote in her notebook.
 April 6
         Today, Ms. Lin asked us to read a book, My Mother Has a Song in Her Heart. She told us to read it with our family and then write a book report. I went home and told my mom about it. She just shook her head and bit her lips. It hurt me to see the sad look on her face.
 April 9
        I knew there is a quiet and lonely song in mom’s heart. She loves us, but she misses her family in Vietnam all the time.
April 12
        I went to Ms. Lin’s office after school and talked to her about our reading homework. I told her my mom can’t read or write Chinese. My dad doesn’t have time to read the book with me. She smiled and said she had a good idea.
 April 16
          Ms. Lin’s idea worked! I read Mom the book five pages a night. Today she told me she just couldn’t wait to listen to me reading the beautiful story every night.
May 1
         When I went home this afternoon, Mom said she had a surprise for me. She made me sit on the sofa, and then she sat beside me. She took out the book and open it to page 86. She smiled and began to read a small poem about mothers and daughters. I just couldn’t believe it! My mom could read some Chinese! I called today Mom’s Magic Day.
