問題詳情

(二)
Once upon a time, there was a man-eating monster called "Nian". It lived in the mountains. It would sleep every day, except on the last day of the Lunar Year, when the cold winter months would turn into spring.Nian would come on land to eat people. On New Year's eve, all the villagers would take their loved ones, old and young, to run away from the monster.
One year on that night, a traveler came to town, looking for food. Everyone, except an old lady, was too busy to give him food or a place to sleep. After his meal, the traveler was touched by the old lady's kindness and decided to tell her how to be rid of the New Year monster.
That evening when Nian arrived at their village, all the houses were dark, except the old woman’s house. As Nian saw the light, it got to the house.Suddenly, it heard noises of firecrackers. The monster was frightened! Next, the monster saw the house in red paper. That scared Nian even more, and it ran back into the mountains.
When the villagers returned, they saw that the old woman wasn’t dead! Everyone wanted to know why she was alive. The old woman told the villagers that Nian was afraid of loud noises and the color red.The next year, the villagers stayed up all night, lit firecrackers, lit red lanterns all around their houses, pasted red paper on their walls and doors, wore red clothing. Nian never returned. This became the way to celebrate Chinese New Year.
